Val Verde Pool Restored To Former Glory After Extensive Repairs

This past Saturday L.A. County Parks Reopened the Val Verde Pool at 30300 W. Arlington Road, Castaic, CA 91384.
In May 2024, L.A. County Park Officials were installing a new lighting system at Val Verde Pool and discovered safety issues requiring the pool to be immediately closed.
During the construction of the pool lighting system to add underwater and deck lighting for night swimming, workers exposed large underground voids under the concrete pool deck and adjacent to the pool retaining wall.
These large air pockets indicated subsurface ground failure that could have compromised the pool deck structure, adjacent retaining wall, and even the pool itself.
“The history of Val Verde is largely unwritten,” said Norma E. García-González, director of L.A. County Parks. “It was considered the ‘Black Palm Springs’ in the 1930s, at a time in Los Angeles history when discrimination kept African Americans from enjoying basic amenities of California life: sunny beaches, parks, hotels, and pools. Val Verde was founded as a place for black families to escape discrimination, which is why it was so important for L.A. County Parks to restore this pool. Not just as a recreational resource to the community, but also to honor this important historical site and what it means to the community. The decision to close the pool was not made lightly, as we knew the impact it would have on the community, but it was necessary to ensure safety and secure the future of pool access to Val Verde for generations to come.”
The retaining wall and subsurface of the pool deck were repaired in order to mitigate the damage from the erosion and subsequent sink hole that formed by a waterline that had failed under the deck. The waterline, which had originally failed was removed and relocated to the exterior of the retaining wall. Catch basins were installed to collect and redirect surface water outside of the retaining wall.
These repairs were made possible by Los Angeles County Supervisorial District 5 Measure A funding of $580,000, that were used to enact the pool deck and wall repairs, along with $96,000 in Quimby funds to accelerate the project by performing excavation and demolition work prior to the start of the main project. The pool lights and deck lights were also installed as part of the separate pool lighting project for a total of $392,000 funded by Los Angeles County Net Cost.
